Yoga Class Descriptions

MIND-BODY MOVEMENT   –   Explore the richness of the relationship between your mind and your body.  This class, based on Somatic principals, uses simple, gentle exercises to help restore optimal resting length and function to muscles that have become painfully tight due to stress, trauma, repetitive motions and/or unconscious habits.  Movements will be guided along with the opportunity to find your own movement vocabulary through basic structured patterns.   Awakening the senses and restore sensory motor awareness to the brain and muscular system.  Asanas will also be incorporated to further enhance flexibility, strength and balance for overall well-being.  This class beginner friendly and suitable for all.

RESTORATIVE – A perfect opportunity to experience a deep state of relaxation where the body can release and heal. Experience prop supported postures with long holds that reduce stress and bring flexibility and balance to the mind and body. Simply let go and surrender. Give your body the natural gift of rejuvenation. Blocks, blankets, bolsters, and straps are optional, and you’ll receive personal assistance for set-up in restorative postures.  This class inspires all levels and adults.

Pilates Reformer is Physical Therapy and Fitness in One

“If your spine is inflexibility stiff at 30, you are old. If it is completely flexible at 60, you are young” -Joseph Pilates

People tell me I’ve lost weight but I haven’t cut back in my diet at all.  I do a different kind of workout on the reformer everyday.  Everyday is a different workout because there’s too many exercises to choose from. It’s more than working the range-of-motion, building strength and flexibility.  I can get a good cardio workout by using the jump board.  Just ask me how.

I start off with a short yoga flow to warm up the body before the Pilates Reformer session.  The client always can’t wait to get on the reformer when we are done with warmup.  It has a relaxing effect as they go beyond their capacity than they normally go in their workouts. The results are amazing.  Hip pain and lower back pain are reduced after a few sessions.  I have witnessed that their core is toned and can see improvements in posture after a month.

When people first see the reformer, they say it looks like a torture chamber.  Don’t be fooled. It’s not as bad as it looks. The exercises can be done lying down, sitting, standing, pulling the straps, pushing the footbar, perched on the footbar, perched on the shoulder blocks, with additional equipment, upside down, sideways, and all kinds of variations.
When the springs are in a lighter setting, some exercises are more challenging for the core because it has to work harder to control and stabilize the movement. The stronger the core, the better the balance, posture, and overall well-being.  The reformer is a great way to build strong bones and lengthen muscles as it resist a force.

Aimless Yogini Path in Waterville Valley

At one time, I was aimless and unsure about leaving a high paying, steady job that bored me.  I was ready for a new adventure. Before I came to Waterville Valley, NH,  I worked 21 years in Applications Development, IT Project Leadership, and Test Engineering in the Washington DC area.  Working in a wide range of wellness related services has been quite a growing experience for me since I moved to Waterville Valley 6 years ago.  Coming to the Valley is a change like no other. I spent summer vacations in Waterville Valley with my family over the years before moving here. Hiking in the mountains has always been a passion all my life. I’m a very earth-element person and I was ready for the great outdoors.
This post is about my insights and experiences.  I had many bumps in the road after I moved here and I’ve learned being authentic is the way to happiness. I always wanted to be a yoga teacher so I poured my heart, soul and thousands of dollars into certifications, courses, workshops and retreats.  I have over 8 years of Yoga Teaching experience to create a one of a kind me.  Providing wellness related activities in a yoga studio is certainly new to Waterville Valley.   First, I taught yoga at White Mountain Athletic Club, and currently teach at the Waterville Valley Town Square Yoga, a studio I established three years ago. I teach at White Mountain Athletic Club on occasion.
It’s an advantage that I came from the Washington DC area where I had a lot of yoga teacher training available.  Since living in Waterville Valley, I fill my cup by traveling to exotic places for yoga workshops and teacher trainings.  I’m part of the Lake Champlain Yoga & Wellness community where my sister lives in Essex, NY.  I visit Kripalu for workshops whenever time and money permits.
To be successful you have to have a variety of niches. That is true everywhere. So, I got training in Pilates and Thai Yoga Bodywork.   Some people who come for pilates reformer personal training aren’t interested in yoga and people who come to yoga have no interest in pilates.  The same goes with meditation, Thai Yoga Bodywork, therapeutic sound and yoga chant.  Being open to other practices that I’m passionate about has expanded my client base.  I offer private sessions in pilates and bodywork therapy so that I can provide more to my clients.
